VENICE SKATE PARK W/ THE JUICE CREW & LEICA AKADEMIE

Who doesn’t want to fly? That might be the best part of skateboarding, that second when you are flying free before gravity calls you down.

I shot this of Bennett Harada during an incredible weekend teaching and shooting with my Leica Akademie workshoppers who turned out to be an extremely talented group. It was a joy to see the results of our “On Assignment” shoot where I asked them to cover Santa Monica Pier and Venice Beach as if they were really on a magazine assignment. They worked hard and made some amazing images- some of which I wish I’d made.

But the most amazing part was getting to meet and photograph the legendary Juice Magazine publisher and owner Terri Craft with Juice editor/photographer/videographer, writer and killer skateboarder Dan Levy. We also met Shota Kubo, a skateboard wizard whose father Shogo Kubo is in the Skateboarding Hall of Fame and the truly legendary surfboard shaper Jeff Ho, also a Juice editor. He’s an artist, skateboarder, surfer and founder of Zephyr Competition Team back in the Dogtown days. It’s not overstating it to say his influence helped define the skate culture. Basically, we visited the hq for the soul of skateboarding.

It was such a blast shooting skateboarding I can’t wait to get back to Venice to try again. Since I can’t actually fly, shooting these folks is the closest I’ll get.  Here’s an album of images from our day: VENICE SKATEBOARD SOUL

Starting the portfolio review at Leica Store & Gallery, Los Angeles. An absolutely amazing group of people from a wide range of backgrounds. All had strong skills that made my job easier. It was a pleasure to pass on some of what I've learned.   Photo by Yvette Trinh/Leica
